Today is the first day on the new platform - Microsoft Teams.* Please go to office.com and use your school email and password, shared with you last week, to log into Teams. All future work will be posted there. To find your assignments, just click on the back pack icon on the left of your Microsoft Office screen and a list of all assignments will pop up. Open each assignment to read the instructions. Complete the task by selecting "edit in browser", then select the "Turn in" button in the assignment, so that I know you have completed the task. If you do not turn in the work, it will keep coming up on your assignments list. You can also watch this video to see how to access and turn in work!
*You will continue to have access to this site for previous assignments, but I will no longer be posting new work here. |
Happy Fri-yay! Nope, that never gets old. There will be no work posted on Monday, in observance of Memorial Day. Please take the opportunity to catch up on key assignments! ELA: 1) Read this passage about what Memorial Day means. (10 mins) 2) Respond to the comprehension questions posted here. The RACE strategy you need to use for the last question means: Restate (the question prompt, as in a turn-around sentence), Answer the question, Cite your evidence from the passage, and end your response (a concluding sentence). (15 mins) 3) Whole Class ELA at 2pm. If you can not make this class, please read for 30 minutes, then respond to a journal prompt in 4-6 sentences. Journal prompts can be found under the Resources tab above. (40 mins) 4) Complete one make up ELA task (this includes listening to the Percy chapters, in order!) (30 mins) MATH: Please complete 2 catch up assignments. If you are completely caught up, please do either MobyMax or Prodigygame for 20 minutes. It's another beautiful day in Connecticut - don't you just love Spring? I definitely loved the acrostic poems you wrote yesterday. Shout out to the poets who turned them in on time: Chris, Alayna, Jazzy, CiCi, and Niyla! I look forward to seeing the rest today. Remember, Friday I will be reaching out to families looking for missing work from this week. Let me know if you need an extra day to catch up. Starting tomorrow, I will be walking you through the Microsoft Teams platform. This is a system we will be using for the remainder of the year to access daily work, find our Zoom meetings, and submit work. In lieu of Social Studies or Science today, we will be logging on to the Teams platform for the first time!
ELA: 1. Go to MobyMax (yep, the "math" site - they have other subjects!). I have assigned a unit on opinion writing. The assignment should be in your student assignments tab to click on. These are levelled for you, but please do the work yourself without assistance from family members or friends. Otherwise, future work will be based on what they can do, not what YOU can do. 2. If you have meeting with a reading teacher, you are done. If you don't meet with a reading teacher today, please take this time to complete any missing ELA work (Harry Potter book club should finish chapters 1 and 2 before tomorrow). MATH: 1. MobyMax MATH for 15 minutes. 2. XTraMath for 10 minutes, or until the online teacher says you are done for the day. OTHER: 1. Watch the first short video tutorial on how to log on. I will be sharing your log on details with your families via Remind. 2. After you log on, leave me a message on our page! LIBRARY: Please complete one item from Mrs. Weinstein's choice board. |

Happy Fri-YAY! Mother's Day is Sunday. This is a day when we celebrate the women in our lives. Women who are our mothers, women who act motherly to us, and women who have raised other mothers that we love and respect. Today we will be preparing for those special women, and taking time to think about why we acknowledge them on May 10. Cool fact, Mother's Day isn't on the same day in other countries. In Spain, it is on the first Sunday in May. In America it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. In Argentina, it is celebrated the third Sunday in October. Let's find out more...
ELA: 1. Listen to Percy, Chapter 12 and keep notes (20 mins) 2. Read the Mother's Day passage and answer the comprehension questions (20 mins) 3. Write a letter to a special woman in your life - mom, step mom, grandma, auntie. Use the personal letter format, 3 paragraphs. Make sure to tell the woman you are writing why she is important to you! The more detail you use, the more honored she will feel that you have taken the time to share your feelings with her. (20-25 mins) MATH: MobyMax 20 minutes ART (Instead of Science/Social Studies - it's for Mother's Day!): Choose one of the four Art for Kids videos to draw something cute for your Mom/Grandma/Auntie/Stepmom. Add it to your letter or make it into a card, but wait until Sunday to share it with them! (15-25 mins) GYM: Complete one task from Mr. Samon's Choice Board at https://www.nbfacademy.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1278826&type=u&pREC_ID=1892642 (10 mins) |

I am interested to know what you thought about the stock market BrainPop from yesterday. I didn't know much about how money worked when I was a kid, other than I knew we needed it to buy things and it came out of an ATM. Over the next several weeks, as we explore economics, we will learn how people and countries make and invest money. We will learn about major purchases and what interest is. You might recall when Mr. Hall came to speak to us about "the magic of compound interest." We will also take a closer look at that. There is a good chance that by the end of the year you will know more about how money works than many grown ups know now! Wow. I'm excited! For today:
ELA: 1. You should have all received your Flat Suki and instructions by now. You can start on the day that is best for you (but I will continue to post it as an assignment), as long as you have a minimum of 7 journal entries and photos by the end. I would love to get them daily, if possible. The deadline for all 7 entries is May 15. Today, read the mailed instructions, take one photo of Flat Suki doing something at your home, and write your first journal entry about her experience. (20 mins) 2. Read on Epic, your book club book, or another book at home, for 20 minutes. Send me one conflict you read about. What's a good story without conflict?! If you are reading non-fiction, send me one interesting fact you learned (yay, then I can learn too!). Math: 1. Prodigygame for 20+ mins 2. If you have a math session today, this counts as assignment two. If you do NOT have a math session today, please do Review pg 15 here. Social Studies: 1. Watch the very short video on "What is economics?" Then, answer for me: What is economics? What is scarcity? Library: Choose and complete one task from Mrs. Weinstein's Choice Board for the week (see link from yesterday). |

Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo. Did anyone have Mexican food? Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is NOT the celebration of Mexico's independence, as many Americans mistakenly believe? In ELA today you will get the real story behind this popular holiday.
ELA: 1. Watch the Cinco de Mayo Video (8 mins) 2. Read the Cinco de Mayo passage and answer the comprehension and cause/effect questions (10-15 mins) 3. Read for 30 minutes from an at-home book, book club book, or Epic.com, then complete a reading journal entry from the list under resources/tools (40 mins) MATH: 1. XtraMath (5-10 mins) 2. If you have a math session with a teacher today, this counts as assignment two. If you do NOT have a math session today, please go to MobyMax and spend 20 minutes on the math section. (20-45 mins) SOCIAL STUDIES: 1. Watch the BrainPop on Stock Markets and take the quiz https://www.brainpop.com/search/?keyword=stock+market (10 mins) 2. Think about 3-5 companies you really like. Find out if they are traded on the stock market by looking here:https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/legacy/companysearch.html Enter the name of the company in the first search field and press enter. If a company is on the stock market (publicly traded), a record will pop up. Tell me the name of each company, whether it is on the stock market, and if it is on the stock market, name one state it is registered in (the state is shown if there is a record). Please call me if you have any questions! (10-15 mins) LIBRARY: Visit Mrs. Weinstein's site and complete 1 task from this week's Choice Board. https://www.nbfacademy.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1278810&type=u&pREC_ID=1893732 |

ELA: 1. Complete the Benchmark Unit 6, Week 1 test. Annotate and use the test taking strategies we have been learning this year. Send me photos of ALL pages so I can see your skilled annotations. (30 mins) 2. If you did not complete the Star Wars questions from yesterday, you can find copies under the handouts tab above. (10 mins) 3. Read for 30 minutes and complete one reading response entry (see Resource tab above for choices). If you are in the Harry Potter book club, your Zoom with me will replace this assignment. (40 mins) MATH: Go to Mobymax.com or directly to our site at www.mobymax.com/CT1737 and complete the assignment. If you have already used Mobymax, you can use your current Username and password. Otherwise, use can log in using the same Username and password that you use for prodigygame. (25 mins) SCIENCE: Complete the bottle flip challenge from your home packets and send me all completed pages. (25 mins) ART: Draw a health hero (see video to left). Add words of thanks or encouragement. Send them to me and I will send them to the Bridgeport Public Hospital from our class! |

Happy Fri-Yay! Today marks the first of a new month. Normally, we would be changing seats today and we would be starting a new number corner calendar. Today also marks the first day of week 8 of Distance Learning. I want today to be a day of reflection and catching up. Embrace these tasks so that we can reenergize for the coming weeks!
ELA: 1. Watch and take notes on Chapter 11, Percy (35 mins) 2. Watch and take notes on any missed chapters. Keep doing this over the weekend so that we are ALL on Chapter 12 come Monday. 3. Journal Entry: This year, I am proud of doing these three things in school...One thing I hope to achieve before the end of 5th grade is... (10 mins) Math: If you have past due math work, complete 2+ assignments. If you are caught up, choose 1 of the following: Prodigygame OR XTraMath OR Flashcards OR play a strategy or math game with someone at home (i.e. Monopoly, Phase10, Buzz)(20-60 mins) Science: Self Care! Think of one thing that helps your mind or body. Research the science behind the why of how this works. Write 6+ sentences explaining your self care choice and what science says about it. Also site your 2+ references. Here is an example: Sleep helps both my body and mind. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that adults need seven or more hours of sleep, and school aged children need nine to twelve hours of sleep every night! From my research on sleep, I learned that the body needs sleep for many reasons. There are two reasons that I think are particularly important. One reason sleep is important is that it helps us be more productive and helps us concentrate. In my job as a teacher, I have to multi-task and meet the needs of many students. It is important that I can concentrate and do my work! Another reason sleep is vital to my health, is that sleep helps reduce your chances of feeling depressed. I don't want to feel depressed, and I don't want any of my loved ones to feel depressed, as this leads to a lot of other problems in life. The sources I used for this information are: The CDC website and medicalnewstoday.com. (30-40 mins) Gym: Choose and complete 1 task from Mr. Samon's 5th grade Choice Board. https://www.nbfacademy.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1278826&type=u&pREC_ID=1892642 (20 mins) |

It's Thankful Thursday, and I have a lot to be thankful for. To start: YOU and how amazing our class is (serious bragging here); my health and the health of my family; Suki; my Nespresso machine (come on, you knew that was going to be on the list!); the trees and occasional warm weather we've been having; good books; and technology to stay in touch with people at this time. What are you thankful for? Your first ELA task is write a journal entry about it...
ELA: 1. Write a journal entry either in sentence form or in list form, naming 6+ things you are thankful for. (10-15 mins) 2. Read for 30 minutes and respond to a reading prompt (40 mins) 3. Interview an adult in your home. Ask them what their favorite books were as a child and what they were about. Send me their responses and your 3-6 sentences (per book) summary. You can do some internet searching about the book to help you. Aim for 2+ books. If they don't have 2, ask a second adult and list them both in your response. (20 mins) My example: One of Mr. Hall's favorite childhood books was The Hobbit. It is a fantasy/adventure novel from the series by JRR Tolkien. The main character, Bilboa Baggins, goes on a quest to find treasure that is guarded by a dragon. Along the way, Baggins faces many strange creatures and many challenges. This book is a prelude to the Lord of the Rings series. It has also been made into a movie. Common Sense Media gives it a perfect score and says it's best for tweens to read alone, or as a read aloud for ages 8+. Math: 1. XTraMath (5-10 mins) 2. Math session with a teacher OR Prodigygame (20 mins) 3. Review page 14 here (15 mins) Social Studies: If you chose Math in Fashion yesterday, watch the first video posted here and take notes on the fashion and math aspects of the show. We will be referencing this show multiple times so make sure your notes are meaningful. If you chose Shark Tank, watch the second video posted here and take notes about the business and math aspects of the show. We will be referencing this show multiple times so make sure your notes are meaningful. (30-40 mins) Library: Choose an activity on Mrs. Weinstein's choice board to complete. The link is listed on yesterday's post. (20 mins) |

Welcome to Wednesday! Yesterday I barely moved from my desk, and still didn't get everything done that I wanted to. Sometimes we have days like that. Every day doesn't have to be super productive, but we should make an effort to get some important things done each day. What are your goals today? I am hoping that completing all of your school work is first on the list! One of my goals today is to create a resources tab here so that you can get copies of your "cheat sheets," anchor charts, and other items you may need for ongoing reference.
Click the Home link to see the winners of Monday's hand sanitizer competition. There were some very creative entries and you should be proud of your efforts. For today: ELA: 1. Listen to Percy, Ch. 10 and continue to take notes. (35 mins) 2. After listening to Ch. 10, do one of the following - draw a picture of the bus fight scene; draw a picture of Smelly Gabe; or, write a 5 sentence prediction for what will happen next. (15 mins) 3. Let's practice finding prepositions of time, place, and movement. Complete the page to the left. (15 mins) 4. Read from Epic or an at-home book (not your book club books!) for 20 mins Math: 1. Either you are meeting with a teacher today to work on Math OR, if you don't have your math session today, please play Prodigygame for 20+ mins Social Studies: Choose 1 of the following to be your focus as a mixed math/economics project: Math Meets Fashion OR Shark Tank. Text me your choice. (2 mins) Science: Complete half of the Slime Experiment sent home OR complete 1 science task from any week's choice boards. Library: Complete 1 task from Mrs. Weinstein's choice board: https://www.nbfacademy.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1278810&type=u&pREC_ID=1893732 |

Good morning class. Did you know that NBFA is posting morning messages on FaceBook and Twitter? The school is also hosting weekly read-alouds, where different teachers across the grades read one of their favorite picture books and then provides discussion questions and even a quick follow up activity. I am scheduled to do a read-aloud April 21, but in the meantime you can watch other read-alouds every Tuesday. These will also be posted on social media.
Today, please do the following: 1. log into your XTra math account at: https://xtramath.org/#/signin/student_other. Go to the Forms/Handouts tab above to see a list of logins for your student accounts. You will also need to use my email to login: [email protected]. Please set a timer to spend 20 minutes in the program. No need to send evidence of your work - I will get a report from the site. 2. Read for 30 minutes (this should be happening every school day). Draw a lower case "t" to fill a page and take notes on the following categories: Characters/Settings/key events/questions. Send me a pic! 3. Watch me begin a new read-aloud of George vs. George. At the end of the intro, I will ask for you to send me 3 interesting things you learned. |
|
Happy April Fools Day! Today's videos include Chapter 25 of Gregor, and a video showing you how to write decimals in expanded form. It is a good idea to write a couple of examples in your notebook, to refer to later. See you tomorrow!
|
|
Today please start with the Chapters 23-24 of Gregor read-aloud. Then, watch episode 106 of Liberty Kids about the Battle of Lexington & Concord. This will help you understand the related passage that is assigned for today, in your packets.
I see that only a few of you are up to date. Please send photos of any work you have yet to share with me. Shout out to Jazzy & Xiarah for teaming up to complete their work! |
|

Enjoy! I'll meet you back here on Monday:) |

Good morning! Today's posts and task are all about math! The first video is a review of adding and subtracting decimals. Please take notes!
The second video will give you a FUN fraction task. The fraction pages can be found under the forms/handouts tab. There are 3 pages. The first is showing another example. BLUE group should do the FIRST fraction name sheet (page 2), and RED group should do the SECOND fraction name worksheet (page 3 of 3). Use your whole first name, do NOT use your nickname. For an extra challenge, try doing your last name with your first name. Send me your artwork - I want to post your work:). If you don't have a printer, you can use the plain white paper I sent home to do the assignment. Shout out to Jermaine and Charles for working hard! |
|
Today, listen to Chapters 20 and 21 of Gregor. Then, write a journal style entry in four sentences or more answering the question at the end of the video. https://youtu.be/t4RPJIGmT6c
THEN, go to BrainPOP and search for "Poetry." Watch the video, then complete the quiz. Remember to share the quiz results with me (you can retake as many times as you like). The video should help solidify what we have explored in class and the mini lesson from Monday. Tomorrow, I will post a second math review. You can skip questions and return to them later in the week, after reviewing the math videos - just don't forget to finish them before next week so you don't fall behind! I am also available for extra help. |
|
In case you didn't hear, we learned yesterday that Governor Lamont has issued an order that all Connecticut schools stay closed until April 20. Wow - that's a long time to be e-learning from home! It is very important to keep a daily routine, whether you do your work at 10am with your breakfast, or at noon in your PJs. Find what works and send me your work daily through Remind, text, or email.
Today there are two tasks posted. One is to get out your math for Monday (yesterday), if you have received your pack. I will be reviewing each type of problem. You should watch the review for each problem, pausing the video to do the work pack problem as needed. If you are up to date and did your work yesterday, please review this video and check your work so that you can submit any corrections. Please watch the ENTIRE video, even if you think you know the material, because often we catch errors when we review! I've also put a quick video showing the Pentagon building - notice it's two pentagons in one! The second task is to do the Word Work Review on Kahoot. Here is the link: https://create.kahoot.it/share/word-work-review/f6fdf184-bf44-41f3-be17-dbedc9811f1c. You may do the Kahoot as many times as you like to get a better score. Make sure I can identify you (no silly names), as this will be a word work grade. See you tomorrow! |
|
Welcome to week 2 of our distance learning platform. Look at my crazy face frozen on the Gregor video! Many of you have not listened to Chapter 18, so please make sure you catch up.
The second video is a poetry lesson - please watch it BEFORE doing the Benchmark assessment! Today I will be delivering work packets to your homes. These packets are for 2 full weeks, plus your daily tasks here. I have divided the work by day to help you keep pace. Feel free to work ahead! Today, there are no additional tasks (other than watching the videos). |
|
Happy Fun Friday! It may not seem the most fun being trapped indoors, but I will do my best! The first video to the left is Ch. 18 from Gregor, which concludes Part 2 of the book. There is no task, but make sure to watch it so that you are prepared for the final assessment projects at the end of the novel study. The "second" video has now been split into 3 different videos so that you can focus on each special class individually. In order, these include: (Video 2) MUSIC - Listen to Nina Simone singing "Backlash Blues." It should sound familiar:). Then, look at the lyrics I've posted under the tab "forms/handouts." Print it out and write next to each stanza (like a poem, this song is divided into 4 stanzas, or sections), OR write your four translations, in order, on lined paper, and tell me what you think Nina was saying. Keep in mind that this song came out during the Civil Rights Movement, when people of color were fighting for their right to be treated equally to whites. Text or email me your work. (Video 3) GYM - Hayden takes you through a quick workout that should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. When you are finished, send me a workout emoji with any challenges you were able to do! (Video 4) ART - Watch the video and draw the baby Yoda. When it's colored, send me a picture and I may even upload them on our site! Have a good weekend, and I will be in touch for next week's plan. Keep checking here daily! |
|

Then, choose your assignment: 4-5 paragraph essay OR diorama (model with labels) OR reenactment that you send to me. See the take home information sheet or text/email me more information if needed. You can use information from these two videos and previous lessons on the American Revolution. Send a photo of your final product. Some topic ideas include (but are not limited to):
*No taxation without representation *The Intolerable Acts *Causes of the American Revolution *Reasons for moving to the New Land *The Boston Tea Party *Closing Boston Harbor *Dunmore's Proclamation "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" For Science, go to the BrainPOP site, using the following logon details: Username: NBFAlearns Password: NBFAlearns1 Select SCIENCE, then search for SPACE. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I will post a new lesson here, with a related task. Please have a notebook and pencil ready to go before playing the videos. You should pause the video while you are working on a problem. Screen shot any final product I have asked for and email or text it to me. Keep the original with your distance learning bag.
Today's lesson is for reading and it is on THEME. Take notes as you watch the lesson. I will write on a white board to show you what you should record. Next to this video, you will find a graphic organizer to complete the task that is discussed in the video. Call me if you need help! |
|
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I will post a new chapter of Gregor here, through a closed YouTube video. Please watch the video before the next one is posted, and then follow the response prompt listed here after watching the new video for that day. Today's prompt:
Text or email me your prediction - what will happen next? |
